USERS MAP by Mikolaj Machowski
... I thought only that the Vim mailing list was very informative and
fast-responding. Now I also think that it is one of the kindest I've came
across. :) Thumbs up!

1. Maps *usr-map*
Basic map is 1024x768 and weighs ca. 214K. Current version (15 May) is here:
Vim-list users world map (1024x768, 214K)
Europe and North America are so crowded I decided to place only small red icons
without names. Full descriptions are on continental close-ups:
Europe (800x600, 195K)
North America (800x600, 150K)
Maps are from NASA Visible Earth archive.

2. Marker file *markerfile*
Informations about vimmers are here:
Marker file for xplanet
This is global file, but actually here are three datafiles:
File for whole world
Europe
North America

3. How to join? *join-map*
Send me <mikmach@wp.pl> your data:
{lat} {lon} {name} {additional}
- {lat} {lon}
- Latitude and longitude. You can obtain them with:
Some of these methods returns decimal notation (preferred).
Please write which notation (traditional 0°0'0" or decimal 0.0000)
are you using - this is not always obvious.
- {name}
- Your name should be recognizable at list - nick, name from sig or
"From:" field
- {additional}
- Name of your place, state, country.
You can restrict some informations. If you don't want disclosure your name -
no problem - only icon will be visible. But please, write it precisely,
without that I will assume all information may be available on internet.
If you want another icon send it me. Not bigger than 16x16 pixels. Formats (in
order of preference): png, gif, jpg.

4. HOWTO *howto*
You can make your own version of map. You need:
World map is made with:
xplanet -markerfile vimlist -shade 100 -fullscreen -output vimlistmap.png
Continental close-ups:
xplanet -markerfile vimlist -shade 100 -geometry 800x600 -radius 180 -output vimeurope.png
Beware: xplanet is not RAM friendly. I am using one of smaller NASA
Visible Earth maps and xplanet can eat my whole RAM (256M) and up
to 420M of swap!
It is possible to make some nice effects:
See where is day:
1024x768 ca. 116K
Use xplanet as wallpaper and see where lives author of current post:
1024x768 ca. 220K
Some time ago I switched to |KDE| and still use xplanet as background.
Start it in .xinitrc: "xplanetbg -output ~/xplanet/kde-bg.png".
And in KDE desktop background settings I am pointing to this file as source
of slideshow, refreshed each 3 minutes.
